In order to respond to the diverse needs and preferences of poor households and entrepreneurs, many microfinance institutions (MFIs) are expanding beyond microcredit to offer a more diverse suite of financial services, such as savings, microinsurance, consumer and housing loans, leasing, and remittance services. In addition, a few pioneering MFIs are exploring integrated services in areas ranging from health facilitation to education finance to energy finance, moving away from the “transactional” nature of microfinance to a more “customer-focused” approach to providing financial services.

USAID’s Microenterprise Development office seeks to capture good practices in market research and product development, to identify innovative business models and methodologies, and to analyze the operational constraints and challenges faced by MFIs in managing multiple product lines.
