The MFMI was co-founded in July 2003 by CGAP and the Open Society Institute (OSI), New York. The mission of MFMI is to advance capacity in microfinance management worldwide. The Institute has worked with universities in the developing world to introduce microfinance as a specialization in graduate programs. Bringing the microfinance manager financial courses and the donor courses under one roof with a network of universities offering academic courses will create synergies and cost savings for all courses, strengthening academic institutions and the skills of microfinance managers, and helping donors support the sector.
The Microfinance in MBA Programs Project (the "MBA Project") is the primary program of the MFMI and its principal mechanism for advancing management capacity in the microfinance sector. The MFMI currently supports six graduate institutions (“MBA Partner Schools”) directly through this project. The MFMI International Fellowship Program in Microfinance Management (the “Fellows Program”) extends support to additional universities worldwide by funding individual researchers to develop graduate-level courses in microfinance. The Global Fund for Materials Development (the “Global Fund”) helps all these institutions, as well as individual microfinance practitioners and experts, to conduct research and develop teaching materials on microfinance management. All final courses and materials developed with MFMI support are posted on their website. Learn more >>
