A USAID online discussion forum on www.microlinks.org

March 4-6 2008

Thank you to all participants for their sharing and learning during the three-day forum.

About the discussion:
Microenterprise and other development organizations work in a complex and changing environment in which they hope to make positive changes. Knowledge of this environment and how local people perceive it, designing an appropriate intervention strategy, and adapting to new developments all require continuous and effective learning. In reality, however, most microfinance organizations or microenterprise development programs allocate hardly any time or resources to knowledge management and learning. As a result, organizations tend to repeat the same mistakes or remain in the dark as to why their actual performance is different from their stated mission and goals.

This three-day online discussion, hosted by Jan Maes and facilitated by guest moderators Sara NaabLuis (Lucho) Osorio, and Sybil Chidiac, focused on the experiences of four microenterprise development organizations (CARE-USA, Practical Action, Freedom From Hunger, and WOCCU) that embarked on a path to Become more Effective Learning Organizations (BELO). With the support of a small grant provided by USAID’s Microenterprise Development office, these organizations spent the last 20 months improving knowledge sharing and learning at a programmatic or organization-wide level. Building on the experiences of these four organizations, the online discussion was a stimulating dialogue about the ways organizations can improve knowledge sharing and learning. In addition to the four moderators, Guest Speaker Ben Ramalingamparticipated in the dialogue and will help prepare an analytical summary of the event.

Each day, participants were invited to share their own experiences, questions and comments in the main event area:
  • Day 1 (March 4): Understanding knowledge management and mapping knowledge assets and flow - Guest moderator: Sara Naab, Freedom From Hunger. Discussion will focus on how to gain a better understanding of knowledge management and learning, how to map existing knowledge assets and flow, and how to identify opportunities for improvement as well as potential barriers to new knowledge sharing and learning practices.
  • Day 2 (March 5): Becoming more effective at learning - Guest moderator Luis (Lucho) Osorio, Practical Action. Based on existing needs, what steps can organizations or programs take, or what can you do personally to improve knowledge sharing and learning within your program or organization? What is the role of technology and how to promote a learning culture?
  • Day 3 (March 6): Measuring results and building support - Guest moderator Sybil Chidiac, CARE-US. How can organizations gauge the effectiveness of improved knowledge sharing and learning processes? How do you measure results and convince senior management, boards, and donors about the importance of ongoing knowledge sharing and learning efforts?
What's a Speaker's Corner?
A Speaker's Corner is an online discussion designed to help practitioners share and learn from each other's experiences. Participants could read and post messages on this page or through their e-mail. Speaker's Corners are organized monthly and an overview of upcoming discussions is posted on the main Speaker's Corner page. If you have feedback about this Speaker's Corner or have ideas for future ones, please contact us at speakerscorner@microlinks.org.
