Ever wonder what we know about strategies to help the poor—and the poorest—participate in and benefit from markets? How do value chain development and financial services affect rural households? What’s so promising about mobile money?

USAID's Office of Microenterprise and Private Enterprise Promotion's (MPEP) Evidence Summit will draw in academic and practitioner expertise to bring us up to speed on these questions. Through presentations and discussions, we hope the Summit helps guide USAID’s promotion of inclusive market development, particularly as part of the strategies to achieve sustainable outcomes for vulnerable populations as well as the Feed the Future and Global Climate Change initiatives in the coming 3-5 years.

Reflections will start with USAID’s work on microenterprise in recent decades and expand to current broader interventions in “Pathways out of Poverty” for the poorest, value chains, and agricultural and rural finance. In each of these areas, the Summit will

  • take stock of existing and emerging evidence on the impacts of different interventions,
  • identify gaps in what we know to contribute to a future research agenda, and
  • discuss implications for USAID’s programming to support microenterprise development.
