MPEP Speakers Corner: Strengthening Smallholder Resilience through Inclusive Markets: Considerations for Program Design

Markets are essential to improving the resiliency of vulnerable populations. Evidence has shown even the most vulnerable populations depend up on markets to meet their basic consumption needs. Understanding how to strengthen the poor’s ability to participate in and benefit from markets is key to improving donor effectiveness in improving resilience and reducing poverty.

On February 26-28, 2013, USAID’s Office of Microenterprise and Private Enterprise Promotion, researchers, and market development practitioners explored the role of inclusive market development in strengthening smallholder resilience and ultimately creating sustainable systems that break chronic cycles of poverty. This discussion is part of an on-going dialogue, which includes the recent Evidence Summit: From Microfinance to Inclusive Market Development and will be used to help guide program design.
